Elon Musk’s SpaceX launches Starlink Mini

SpaceX has introduced a compact version of satellite internet antennas. Called Starlink Mini, the antenna is portable and can be packed in a backpack. The product is dubbed revolutionary due to being a mobile option for satellite internet customers.

Currently, a limited number of antennas are being offered for just $599 each in an early access release. Starlink Mini integrates the WiFi router right inside the dish and can deliver over 100mbps speed.

Elon Musk claims the product has the power to change the world.

Portable kit has IP67 rating

“I just set it up right now and am writing this post through space. Took less than 5 mins. Easily carried in a backpack. This product will change the world,” Musk said in a post on X.

Measuring 11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 inches (298.5 x 259 x 38.5mm), the device has an IP67 rating, which means it can protect itself from rain, dust, and short periods of water immersion.

The company claims that despite offering a higher speed, the device consumes less power.

Currently, it’s not confirmed when the device will be available in the market. “Mini with integrated WiFi (puppy not included). Ramping production and will be available in international markets soon,” said vice president of Starlink Engineering Michael Nicolls.

Claimed to be 63% lighter than the standard Starlink dish, the device can easily fit in your backpack. It has the capacity to operate at -22°F to 122°F (-30°C to 50°C).

The Starlink Mini Kit comes with a kickstand and pipe adapter in the box, which accommodate a variety of setups.

The device has the capacity to connect up to 128 devices.

Targeting global markets

The company claims that Starlink Mini will expand to other markets over time. “However, we do not have estimated dates to provide at this time.”

The company maintains that its goal is to reduce the price of Starlink, especially for those around the world where connectivity has been unaffordable or completely unavailable.

“In regions with high usage, like the US, where Starlink Mini places additional demand on the satellite network, we are offering a limited number of the Starlink Mini Kits to start at a higher price point.”

As a standalone service, Starlink Mini could be transformative for anyone in need of an inexpensive and sharable internet service that efficiently uses DC battery power.
