Monday marks the beginning of a trial for a civil lawsuit in which the judge already ruled that Donald Trump committed fraud.
Trump has been open about his plan to voluntarily attend the trial and appear in court. He wrote on Truth Social: “I’m going to Court tomorrow morning to fight for my name and reputation.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James launched an investigation years ago, taking a look at accusations that his company committed fraud and lying about its actual financial standings. Judge Engoron already made a ruling on the main claims in the suit: deception of banks and insurers by fudging the valuation of his assets.
In response to the situation, Trump attacked James and Judge Engoron in a post. He wrote: “THIS WHOLE CASE IS SHAM!!! See you in Court – Monday morning.”
In the past, during a tax fraud eviction, Trump avoided coming to court to defend himself or his company, not even just to watch. He did the same when he was found liable for a sexual assault. However, Monday’s trial is different because not only is Trump planning to attend, but he’ll be doing so weeks before he’s even expected to testify.
Trump is facing $250 million in penalties if he is convicted, Plus, he would get slammed with a ban on doing any business in New York, as a result the current company control would be changed to some court-appointed receiver. In fact, it may even impact his famous Trump Tower holdings. He wrote on Truth Social: “I have a Deranged, Trump Hating Judge, who RAILROADED this FAKE CASE through a NYS Court at a speed never before seen.”
After all, the suit alleges that Trump claimed his Trump Tower apartment was worth $327 million, but the Attorney General said that an apartment has never been sold in New York City for anywhere near that number. His alleged apartment fib is just the beginning; James also said that Trump lied about his wealth by at least $3.6 billion.
Still undecided are allegations including conspiracy, insurance fraud, and falsifying business records. All of these, and the prior rulings, Trump has denied. His lawyers argue that no one was harmed and that there is a disclaimer on the statements that would absolve him of responsibility if the numbers were wrong.
