Flights grounded due to snow as planes circle airports waiting to land

Travellers are facing delays this morning  at two airports in the capital due to the snowy weather that blanketed the city overnight. Many flights waiting to depart Gatwick Airport are currently grounded and arrivals are delayed at Heathrow Airport, with planes circling in the skies waiting to land at the West London airport.

Temperatures plummeted overnight, feeling as cold as -3C in some local areas, as flurries of wintry snowfall littered the capital. The knock-on effect has been seen this morning at two of the capital’s major airports, where flights currently remain delayed or cancelled in some cases.

Images posted from the Twitter account SkyScanWorld show many flights circling overhead Gatwick and Heathrow, as the icy conditions have made it difficult to land.

MyLondon has contacted Gatwick Airport and Heathrow Airport for more information.
London City Airport have confirmed there were ’23 cancellations’ to flights this morning due to the snowy weather.

The airport also said the airfield opened at 8am – an hour and a half later than usual – but it is fully operational now. A flight map shared to Twitter by SkyScanWorld shows multiple airlines circling overhead, waiting to land at either Gatwick Airport, Heathrow Airport or London City Airport.

The image shows several planes having to make multiple loops as delays force them to hold in the skies. A later tweet by SkyScanWorld shows that the skies appear to be getting slightly less congested as the morning progresses.
