Madonna is understood to have ended up in hospital over the weekend due to a “serious” infection, which is said to have meant that she spent days in an intensive care unit.
The news about the singer-songwriter, 64, was shared on Wednesday evening by her manager Guy Oseary, 50, who stated his client on social media.
He shared that whilst she was “improving” and expected to make a full recovery, Madonna’s commitments would need to be paused, including her upcoming Celebration tour.
Her manager concluded his statement: “We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows.”
It however isn’t the first time that one of her tours has been impacted by her health, as the Madame X tour was plagued with issues after launching in September 2019.
Throughout its run, which concluded in March of the following year, the Grammy Award winner is said to have experienced injuries and she later seemingly had surgery.
Injuries
Madonna canceled several shows on the tour, citing injuries as the cause. This began with a performance in New York City in October 2019 due to her “dealing with a knee injury”.
It was stated that she had been advised to rest for a few days to assist in her recovery and the following month three shows in Boston were canceled “due to doctor’s orders”.
She said at the time: “The pain I’m in right now is overwhelming and I must rest and follow doctor’s orders so I can come back stronger and better and continue [the tour]”.
Further concerts were affected in January 2020, with it announced that she was unable to perform at a show in Lisbon that month “due to pain from her ongoing injuries”.
When one of her shows in London was canceled the same month, it was stated that doctors had advised her to rest. Madonna apologized once again for disappointing her fans.
She also said in a statement: “As you all know I have injuries that have plagued me since the beginning of the tour but I must always listen to my body and put my health first.”
Around the same time, it was reported that Madonna had said she was doing hours of rehab every day before shows and that she’d modified parts of the show to further help.
Shortly before the tour ended prematurely, which is understood to have been due to the Covid-19 pandemic, she canceled a show in Paris in March 2020 over “ongoing injuries”.
Madonna stated in a post around the same time: “If only knees didn’t twist and cartilage didn’t tear and nothing hurt and tears never fell out of our eyes. But alas they do”.
She added that during a show around that time, she fell on stage due to an accident, with her having told fans in the post on social media: “I landed on the floor on my tailbone.”
Months after the tour ended, Madonna announced that she was seeking treatment for a “missing cartilage” following her apparent injuries whilst she had been touring the world.
She wrote: “Finally going to get my regenerative treatment for my missing cartilage! I would be jumping up and down if I could after 8 months of being in pain! Wish me luck!”
Madonna was also believed to have undergone surgery sometime in 2020 and she reportedly later suggested that she had hip replacement surgery following the tour.
As reported by Extra, Madonna stated in Madame X Presents: Madame Xtra Q&A: “During my [Madame X] tour … I don’t know if you’ve noticed it, but I’m limping a lot …”
She’s quoted as having further commented in the special: “I was in more pain that I’ve ever been in in my life. I’m a bionic woman … I had hip replacement surgery.”
Although it didn’t appear to lead to any cancelled shows, Madonna later stated that she also ended up catching Covid towards the end of the Madame X tour in March 2020.
Months after the tour, she told fans she had antibodies to the virus and later said: “I am not currently sick. When you test positive for anti-bodies it means you HAD the virus”.
She continued: “I clearly did as I was sick at the end of my tour in Paris over 7 weeks ago, along with many other artists in my show […] We all thought we had a very bad flu.”
The singer issued an update in the post – which she shared on social media in May 2020 – about her health. She said at the time: “Thank God we are all healthy and well now.”
