Man killed after plane carrying skydivers crashes on Mexico beach

A man was killed after a plane crashed on a beach in southern Mexico on Sunday while attempting to make an emergency landing, CBS News reported citing authorities.

The plane, which was carrying four skydivers, was largely intact when it fell in a populated area near Puerto Escondido and landed almost on top of the victim, whose nationality was not disclosed. The four Canadians and one Mexican man onboard were removed from the small aircraft and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The injured, aged 60, 59, 41 and 35, were reported to be in a “stable” condition, according to the Oaxaca state civil defence office. The names and hometowns of the Canadians are unknown. The office said the dead man’s wife had been nearby but was unharmed.

Puerto Global reported that the victim was taking pictures with his wife when the plane crashed, with the side marked “Skydive Puerto Escondido” on the aircraft, which advertises jumps from 13,000 feet above sea level on its website.

Puerto Global also posted a video of the crash’s aftermath showing beachgoers carrying at least one person from the aircraft over the sand. The accident happened just yards away from the water and even closer to a wooden beach structure of the kind frequently used in Puerto Escondido for restaurants.

State Governor Salomon Jara said in a social media post that resources were being mobilised to help the plane passengers who were injured. To the family of the person who died, we will provide all the necessary support and accompany them in the face of their irreparable loss,” he said.
