Johnny Depp forced to cancel concert due to health issues

Johnny Depp and his supergroup The Hollywood Vampires were forced to cancel a concert at the last minute, leaving fans both devastated and worried. Those who had been hoping to see the rockstars in Budapest on Tuesday night were left disappointed after it was announced on Instagram that the show would not be going ahead.

A statement from the band did not reveal the reason for the show’s cancellation. Instead, it read: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Vampires will be canceling tonight’s show in Budapest.”

The band added: “We love and appreciate all of the fans who traveled from near and far to see us rise, and we’re truly sorry.”

The announcement comes just days after Johnny had to rely on the help of a crutch as he made his way to a concert, having suffered a “painful” ankle injury.

Here, we take a look back at the actor’s health woes over the years. Johnny Depp was spotted using a crutch as a walking aid just last week, as he was seen leaving his hotel in Glashow to make his way to a performance with The Hollywood Vampires.

The 60-year-old was in Glasgow to perform at the OVO Hydro with the group, which is also made up of Vince Furnier, Tommy Henriksen, and Joe Perry.

Just days later, The Hollywood Vampires canceled their concert in Budapest. They have not shared a reason for the cancellation. Back in May, Johnny was forced to postpone some of his concerts after suffering an ankle injury and being warned by doctors to take it easy.

Taking to Instagram at the time, Johnny wrote: “My dear friends, I am sorry to say that I have fractured my ankle, which is a drag!!! It began as a hairline break but somewhere between Cannes and the Royal Albert Hall, it got worse rather than better.

“Several medical professionals have strongly suggested I avoid any and all activity for the moment and so am sadly unable to travel at this time.”

A statement shared on the band’s account added: “Johnny has sustained a painful injury to his ankle following his recent appearances and has been advised by his doctor not to travel.

“He is devastated by this turn of events, but looks forward to resting up so all four Vampires can bring their absolute best to the tour in Europe.”

Johnny has often spoken candidly about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction. During his defamation trial against News Group Newspapers, it was revealed he had been diagnosed with “primary dopamine imbalance, depression, chronic substance abuse disorder, and nicotine addiction”.

Speaking at the 2020 trial, the actor said in a statement: “I have been open about my challenges with alcoholism and addiction throughout my life.”

He added: “I started drinking and taking drugs when I was still a child. I am not in any way embarrassed to say this.”

Johnny also opened up about his drug use during his relationship with Amber Heard. He admitted: “I have taken other drugs in my life and I did take other drugs during the course of our relationship but I never suffered from addiction from those drugs.”

Back in 2008, the Pirates of the Caribbean star opened up about what led him to take drugs. Speaking to the Boston Globe, he said: “I felt I could only be myself when I was alone, that I turned into some kind of novelty. The only way I could get through that time was to drink.”

During his battle to get sober, Johnny was diagnosed with depression and chronic substance abuse. He also received an ADHD diagnosis.

His medical history was revealed during his libel trial against News Group Newspapers, during which Sasha Wass QC told the court Johnny had been referred to a doctor as he attempted to address his addiction issues back in 2014.

The Hollywood star has spoken openly about his battle with depression and how he was left feeling “low” following a series of personal issues.

“I was as low as I believe I could have gotten. The next step was, ‘You’re going to arrive somewhere with your eyes open and you’re going to leave there with your eyes closed’. I couldn’t take the pain every day,” he told Rolling Stone.

Amid his break-up with actress Amber Heard, Johnny also found himself in a legal battle with his former managers.
