One of the witnesses in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case has died. This was revealed by state prosecutor, Advocate George Baloyi in the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday, 20 July.
Baloyi said the witness, Lesly Ngcatshe, died about two weeks ago and he doesn’t feel comfortable disclosing the cause of his death as he is not the family spokesman.
Ngcatshe was the Khumalos’ neighbour in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, where footballer Meyiwa was gunned down in October 2014.
According to the defence lawyer Sipho Ramosepele, Ngcatshe gave a statement on how he blew the whistle during the shooting to alert other neighbours.
He was also due to testify on behalf of the state about the events of the fatal night that claimed the life of the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Meyiwa.
Meanwhile, during the first leg of cross-examination of singer Zandie Khumalo by Ramosepele, she insisted that she was not drunk during the incident.
Zandie was being questioned about her sobriety on the day. She told the court that she drank three cans of cider, but she wasn’t drunk.
She said:
I’m not new to alcohol. Three cans of alcohol doesn’t do anything to me.
Ramosepele for accused one and two was leading the cross-examination when he further asked Zandie about the description she gave of the two intruders who allegedly shot and killed Meyiwa.
He further asked if the intruder uttered any swear words when they demanded money and cellphones, to which Zandie answered no.
He also asked about his demeanor and tone, which Zandie said seemed serious and had a firm voice.
Ramosepele also brought up the issue of the gun, asking Zandie to describe the firearm that one of the intruders pointed at them with.
Zandie said: “Firstly, I don’t know guns. But it was not dark and it was not a big gun, but small.”
Asked about the colour of the barrel of the gun, Zandie said Ramosepele was speaking French to her and she didn’t understand what he was saying.
The cross-examination is continuing.
