Police drop rape investigation into Tory MP Andrew Rosindell

Police have dropped a rape and sexual assault investigation into Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell. Mr Rosindell, the MP for Romford, has not voted in the House of Commons since May 2022, when he says the allegations were made.

The Metropolitan Police said the allegations included indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in public office.

Politics latest: Tough week for Rishi Sunak as by-elections loom. But a “thorough investigation” has now finished and officers decided there was not enough evidence to prosecute.

A spokesperson for the force said: “In January 2020, the Met received a report relating to alleged sexual offences having been committed in London between 2002 and 2009.

“A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested in May 2022 on suspicion of indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in public office.A thorough investigation has been carried out by detectives. They concluded that the evidence did not meet the threshold set by Crown Prosecutors. The man has been informed he will face no further action.”

A statement from Mr Rosindell’s office said: “In relation to an allegation made in May 2022 by an individual against Andrew Rosindell, the Metropolitan Police have conducted a thorough investigation and concluded that there was no case to answer and that no further action would be taken.

“Andrew has been completely exonerated. He has been working constantly for Romford throughout the past 21 months and will continue to speak up for the people of his beloved home town as their local MP.”

It is not clear if or when Mr Rosindell will return to voting in the Commons, after agreeing with his party’s whips to not take part while the investigation was underway.
