Mbira Musician Stella Chiweshe has DIED

Harare – Mbuya Stella Chiweshe has died…  A top arts promoter in Zimbabwe who confirmed the death to said the singer has not been feeling well for some time.

“It is so sad we have lost our veteran mbira musician. Mbuya Stella Chiweshe is no more. May her soul rest in peace,” said the promoter who requested anonymity.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe executive director Nicholas Moyo said: “It is sad we are releasing the statement now. January is such a bad month for us.” Reports have it that Stella Chiweshe died this morning at her Kuwadzana home in Harare, Zimbabwe.

National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) executive director Nicholas Moyo has described the late mbira songbird Mbuya Stella Chiweshe as Zimbabwe’s Queen of Mbira.

The veteran mbira musician Mbuya Stella Chiweshe succumbed to cancer of the brain yesterday morning at her Kuwadzana home in Harare. She was 77.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of National Arts Merit Award (Nama) legend Mbuya Stella Rambisai. Her daughter Virgnia Mukwesha-Hetze informed me that Mbuya Chiweshe died peacefully from cancer of the brain at home in Harare this morning,” Moyo said.

“Born on July 8, 1946, in Mujumi Village in Mhondoro, Mbuya Stella Chiweshe was undoubtedly Zimbabwe’s Queen of Mbira and one of the country’s foremost cultural exports.

With her swooping vocals on the mbira, she brought traditional Zimbabwean Shona music to the international stage.”

Moyo said burial arrangements will be announced in due course and mourners were gathered at Mukwesha Homestead in Chinyika, Goromonzi.

With a career spanning over 40 years, Mbuya Chiweshe was a recipient of various local and international awards, including the Billboard Music Award (1993), the NAMA award (2006), the Nama Lifetime Achievement Award (2020), and the Nama Legends Awards (2021).

More than a year after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by Alec Baldwin on the “Rust” movie set, prosecutors announced they will charge the actor and the film’s armorer with involuntary manslaughter, accusing the pair of failing to perform essential firearm safety duties that could have prevented the tragic accident.

Hutchins was killed on the film’s New Mexico set in October 2021 when a prop gun Baldwin was holding fired a live round of ammunition, striking Hutchins in the chest and hitting director Joel Souza in the shoulder.

Baldwin has maintained that he never pulled the trigger and was not aware the gun contained live rounds. Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the set armorer who loaded the prop gun, says she believed the rounds were dummy ammunition, according to her lawyer. Read More
